This year, UCP introduced a weeklong day camp experience in addition to our yearly overnight camps. Partnering with the YMCA, UCP Recreation participants were able to join other children at YMCA’s summer day camp. According to both families and volunteers, it was a delightful adventure for participants. Each day started with a warm welcome and some free time, which included arts and crafts, boardgames, reading, and other games.
Once all of the campers arrived, they transitioned to “campfire time”. During campfire time participants would gather together and do camp songs/chants. Then, campers would then play minute-to-win-it style games. Following that, campers moved to the courts for some outdoor time. They were able to choose from pickleball, tennis, hockey, chalk, Jenga, connect four, basketball, or bubbles.
Later in the day, participants transitioned to a STEAM activity (science, technology, engineering, art and math). We did STEAM Activities like creating robots out of marshmallows, the “Save Fred” problem solving activity, and making bouncy balls. After lunch, campers got to have swim time at the pool. At the pool there were diving boards, and campers had the opportunity to take turns jumping into the water. The pool was a highlight for many campers.
On Wednesday we went to MOSAC (Museum of Science and Curiosity)! Campers broke into groups and explored the museum. After an afternoon snack, campers cooled down in the junior lounge with an indoor activity such as crafts, yoga, movie day, word search, painting, etc. At the end of the day, campers have free time and are able to choose any activity to finish the day. During free-choice time campers could ride stationary bikes, do arts/crafts, play board games, video games, read, play with toys, or relax with friends.
As this camp was in collaboration with the YMCA’s existing summer day camps, UCP Recreation participants got to experience camp alongside children outside of UCP programs. This provides opportunities to grow communication and understanding on a new level, as well as promote the importance of community engagement and inclusivity.
