We do all the same things that other parents do, but everything is just a little tweaked, a little bigger, a little more thinking ten steps down the road . . . The Respite has been so helpful for us because let’s be honest, there’s a high divorce rate for parents of children with special needs. The stress can be a lot, so having a support network that you can rely on is life changing

#GiveMomABreak on Giving Tuesday

You can be a hero to an overwhelmed Mom by joining us in the kickoff for the Season of Giving! UCP is putting a special twist on Giving Tuesday, this December 3rd, with #GiveMomABreak!

That’s where UCP’s Family Respite comes in. When caregivers need a break and a few hours to rest and renew their energy, UCP’s Family Respite Services is there to help.

You can #GiveMomABreak for more families like Mari’s on Giving Tuesday! Your donation of $52 will pay for a Respite session for a family.

Why Give Mom A Break?

According to a recent 2017 survey of Caregivers of individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities conducted by The Arc:

  • 85% report that balancing responsibilities (children, work, marriage) is a challenge
  • 89% of respondents are women and 87% are parents of the person with a disability for whom they are caring
  • Caregivers report difficulties addressing their own health issues (65%) and finding time to meet their personal needs, such as personal time, exercise, etc. (86%)

UCP sends a Respite worker to the home of a child with a developmental disability. Mom gets the freedom to complete activities we often take for granted in our everyday lives –reading a book, taking a nap, or spending quality time with friends.

UCP Family Respite clients Mari and Harold have 5 children, two of whom have developmental disabilities. In a UCP Podcast, Harold and Mari explain how Respite has helped them manage the stress of what Mari calls the “exaggerated parenting” of children with developmental disabilities. Check out the podcast to hear more about their story!

About #GivingTuesday

#GivingTuesday was started in 2012 as a response to commercialization and consumerism in the post-Thanksgiving season. We have two days for getting deals – Black Friday and Cyber Monday. On #GivingTuesday, we have a day for giving back. Together, people are creating a new ritual for our annual calendar. #GivingTuesday is the opening day of the giving season.
