Mobility Opportunities Via Education (MOVE)

Adult Day Program clients gain independence through MOVE

Many of UCP adult clients have physical limitations that affect their ability to walk upright.  For those clients participating in UCP’s Adult Day Program, they have access to the Mobility Opportunities via Education (MOVE) program.  MOVE uses equipment like the Rifton Pacer Gait Trainer to help clients learn self-help skills, increase their ability to communicate and improve their range of motion. Each day during the week, clients, with the help of specialized equipment and guided instruction, can enjoy assisted mobility for up to an hour a day, five days a week. The Pacer can adjust to fit clients of all ages and adapt to their individual strength levels, providing various levels of support.

We’ve noticed how respect from others tends to increase when Cetarra is using the Pacer. She’s able to stand on her own, she’s not in a wheelchair with people looking down at her and it makes a difference. Spending much of her time in a wheelchair, or crawling when at home, Cetarra feels a sense of newfound freedom when she’s able to stand upright and look individuals in their eyes.
